The Birmingham Dickens Fellowship (als)
The Birmingham Dickens Fellowship was founded in 1903 and we are Branch No. 19. We meet in the Birmingham and Midland Institute, in the heart of the city. The original Institute was demolished in 1970, and the Fellowship re-located to the present premises, an attractive Grade II listed building.
Charles Dickens came to Birmingham many times to give public readings at the Town Hall, and took a keen interest in the work of the Institute, and became its president in 1869.
The aim of the Fellowship is to stimulate, or re-kindle an appreciation of Dickens pure artistry with words, and for his eminently great genius of story telling
Although Birmingham is a large city, our Fellowship is quite small, however, we present a varied programme, not all connected to Dickens, but always followed by a lively discussion, which invariably touches on some aspect of Dickens' life or work.
We are a very friendly group, and would dearly like to increase our membership. We meet on the second Wednesday in the month from September to June, at 7.00p.m. All visitors can be assured they would receive a very warm welcome.
